Pedagogy

Teachers play an integral role in a Waldorf School. Teaching each child with love and a firm belief that every child is special, demands that the teacher be willing to work relentlessly with his/her own will and seek to constantly learn and grow. Anthroposophy – the study of man is the philosophy behind Steiner education. The key elements of Anthroposophy are to encourage one to tread a path of knowledge, a path of self-development and a path that energizes the individual’s own spiritual powers. All teachers in Sloka aim to imbibe this philosophy so that they have the ability to enable every child to find their life goals with greater assurance and clarity. The goal of every teacher is to help children develop skills and raw material in order to live to the fullest and realize their potential as human beings.

Am I reaching the child effectively? What can I do to have a better response from the child? How can I balance the child’s temperament? How can I stimulate their interest and increase concentration? These are important questions Waldorf teachers ask themselves in their pursuit of excellence. Sloka teachers regularly conduct group reviews to seek improvements by reading Steiner lectures, reviewing the curriculum against the lesson plan, considering the balance of movement, rhythm, thinking and art in the lessons. Sloka boasts of a team of extremely committed teachers who bring their passion and love for children to the school every single day. Our senior teachers have remained with the school for 7-8 years. Our Class Teachers are committed to staying with the same set of children for at least 4-5 years. Due to this, the bond between teachers and children becomes very strong. Teachers spend many hours learning new, creative ways to teach children. Teachers take care to make the classrooms warm and inviting for the children. The Pedagogical section meets every week to read the works of Rudolf Steiner and discuss child-related issues and concerns. Even today, a great deal of importance is given to Teacher Training. In-house training is conducted by the senior teachers of our school. We have several experienced Waldorf teachers visiting and working with us to train and mentor the teachers and make sure that quality education is imparted to children. Mentors visit us from Switzerland, Germany, USA and Norway on a regular basis. They conduct workshops on early childhood education and the Waldorf curriculum in the Grade classes. These workshops are also open to those in the community who are interested in understanding Waldorf education.
